Virgin Atlantic plans to add 84 new routes at Heathrow after third runway is completed
  • Virgin Atlantic recently revealed that it is planning to expand its network by adding over 80 new routes after London Heathrow's expansion is completed. Heathrow's expansion which includes construction of a third runway is planned to be completed by 2026. Virgin Atlantic expects to serve up to 84 new destinations from the airport after the expansion. The airline currently operates to 19 long-haul destinations from Heathrow and is hoping to serve 103 airports including domestic and European locations to become a "second flag-carrier". Heathrow is at present dominated by British Airways owner IAG, which holds more than 55% slots for take-off and landing.

Hyatt unveils plans for two Manchester hotels Hyatt has announced to open first two Hyatt-branded hotels in Manchester – Hyatt Regency Manchester Oxford Road and Hyatt House Manchester Oxford Road. The hotels will mark the entry of Hyatt's extended stay brand, Hyatt House, into the UK and the third Hyatt Regency hotel of the country. These properties will be located in the landmark "The Lume" building and are expected to open in 2020. The Hyatt Regency will offer 212 rooms, a restaurant, bar, club lounge, fitness centre and seven meeting rooms while Hyatt House will offer apartment-styled living with spacious, modern and comfortable suites. The launch of these properties will increase the number of Hyatt branded hotels in the UK up to 11 by 2022.

Taj Hotels to bring the Chambers members' club to UK
  • Luxury group Taj Hotels has announced to bring its members' club The Chambers to the UK. At present, the club has six locations in India and one in Dubai, however, it is launching the concept at its UK properties, Taj - 51 Buckingham Gate and St. James' Court - A Taj Hotel from March 2020. The company also stated that it has plans to open a third UK property at Heathrow, with other properties in London, Manchester and Birmingham also being considered. The group has also announced that the club, which was originally founded in 1975, could also extend to New York around 2021.
Virgin Atlantic to codeshare with Brazil's GOL
  • Virgin Atlantic has announced to sign a new codeshare agreement with Brazilian airline GOL that will cover 37 destinations across Brazil. This will allow passengers on the UK airline's forthcoming London Heathrow-Sao Paulo service to connect to all the 37 destinations including Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and Recife. Both the airlines will have Wi-Fi, in-flight entertainment and matching baggage allowances; luggage will be checked through to passengers' final destination. Virgin Atlantic's flights from London Heathrow to Sao Paulo will launch on 29 March 2020.

Brussels Airlines announces to launch flights to Montreal in 2020 Brussels Airlines has announced to launch flights between Brussels and Montreal, Canada in the summer season on 29 March 2020. The airline will offer five flights a week from Brussels Airport to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport on Monday and from Thursday to Sunday. The flights will depart Brussels at 1015 and land in Montreal at 1205 local time with the return flight taking off at 1825 and arriving at 0710 the next day. With the remaining aircraft capacity in winter the airline will increase its offer to Washington in February which will become a year round service. The airline has also announced to cease its seasonal flights to Toronto in January.

Star Alliance and NEC to partner up for biometric identification
  • Star Alliance airline network has partnered with technology giant NEC to develop a biometric data-based identification platform. This platform aims to improve the travel experience of frequent flyer programme customers of Star Alliance member airlines. With this service Star Alliance customers will have a seamless and handsfree passenger experience and will be able to pass through curb-to-gate touchpoints within airports such as check-in kiosks, lounges, bag drop, and boarding gates which traditionally require both a passport and boarding pass. Only those passengers who are registered in one of the star alliance frequent flyer programmes and who have authorised the use of their biometric data can avail the service.
Avis to bring Ford connected cars to Europe
  • Avis Budget Group has announced an agreement with Ford Commercial Solutions to bring connected vehicles to Europe. The agreement will see around 14,000 Ford vehicles in Avis Budget Group's fleet connected. The connected vehicles allow Avis customers to manage their rental experience through the Avis mobile app which includes everything from choosing the type of vehicle they want to rent to upgrading and extending the duration of their rental through their phones. The return process is also automated with connected technology allowing users to drop off their vehicles through the app.

United announces to remove MileagePlus expiration dates United Airlines has announced to remove the expiration date on travellers' frequent flyer miles. Effective immediately, the change means travellers saving miles for a trip will no longer have to worry about losing them; it will give them a lifetime to use miles on flights, hotels, experiences and more. Luc Bondar, VP of loyalty and president of MileagePlus at United stated that their MileagePlus programme provides customers with more ways to earn and use miles than any other US airline. The members can use miles to purchase award flights to over 1,300 destinations through the United and Star Alliance network, seat upgrades, car rental, hotel stays and other services with the airline's partners.

Virgin Australia and No1 Lounges to open new Brisbane International Lounge
  • Virgin Australia has launched their newest lounge concept at Brisbane's international airport in partnership with the UK based No1 Lounges Company. This is the third No1 Lounge in Australia after Melbourne and Sydney based lounges, aiming at the leisure travellers. The lounge has an open space positioned within the airport corridors welcoming all checked-in passengers from all airlines across all ticket classes. With a cafe-style vibe, the lounge can only hold 108 guests at capacity. It gives guests access to a hot and cold food buffet, barista-made coffee, a curated wine list and even a cocktail station; and the menu will change every fortnight.

United announces to expand international network United Airlines has announced an expanded international schedule from its hubs in Denver, Chicago, San Francisco and New York (Newark), including additional flights to and from London. The announcement includes brand-new service to Nice, France, Palermo-Italy and Curacao. It has also been stated that customers will have more options when planning travel to Europe with additional flights to Amsterdam, London, Zurich and Frankfurt-Germany. The airline also intends to expand service between Denver, Colorado and London Heathrow to a year-round offering from 1 November, with flights operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
